Fmoc-Gly-OH

Fmoc-Glycine (Fmoc-Gly-OH) is a glycine derivative that is protected with the Fmoc (fluorenylmethyloxycarbonyl) group. The Fmoc group is a base-sensitive protective group that can be removed under basic conditions, such as in concentrated ammonia or a solution of dioxane-methanol-4N NaOH (30:9:1), as well as in various amine solutions like piperidine, ethanolamine, cyclohexylamine, 1,4-dioxane, and pyrrolidone. Fmoc protection is typically introduced using Fmoc-Cl or Fmoc-OSu under mildly basic conditions, such as sodium carbonate or sodium bicarbonate.

Fmoc-Glycine is primarily used in peptide synthesis, where the choice of amino acid protection plays a significant role in the efficiency and yield of the process. It is a versatile component, as it can also be used to prepare glycine-derived corrosion inhibitors. By reacting with the Fmoc-protected group and hydrophobic long chains through amide bonding, this derivative is able to adsorb to metal surfaces via heteroatoms (such as nitrogen, oxygen) or unsaturated bonds in the aromatic rings. The hydrophobic long chains block water molecules, forming a protective film on steel surfaces and serving as an effective corrosion-resistant agent.
